Professor KATO, Chutaro
Head: Woodworking Branch of the Japanese Society of Technology Education

Education at university level in Japan has gone through tremendous reforms in recent years. The technology education and woodworking education will also see similar changes in future. Thus, we have been placed to consider the various global view-points on our research and education activities.

At the International Conference (ICTES) organized by the Japanese Society of Technology Education in 1995, many researchers from over 8 different countries gathered, and a lot of new proposals on technology education were presented by each country. It has provided us a lot of useful information.

At the same time, international exchange on research presentation is expanding at a rate like the increasing holiday trip abroad. Therefore, we must realize that the time has come where we no longer can avoid internationalization and informatization. Listening to lectures related to our fields with international view-points and understandings becomes very significant to us. We have to try to take every opportunity as we can in order to face the rapid reforms in our university education needs. A decision has been made two years ago that we would organize an international activity based on our capability and resources. Some activities have been planned actually. Finally one of them is successfully organized as you can see now.

Today, we are indeed fortunate to have Professor Calhoun, a professor who has been involved in woodworking education at Central Washington University of the United States of America for more than twenty years, as our speaker. On behalf of everyone here today, I wish to thank Professor Calhoun for his invaluable time and effort taken to speak to us, Professor Yamashita for arranging this program, and the participants from far and near for your kind attendance.

We sincerely hope that this meeting will contribute to international development of woodworking education, and give us the opportunity to share our education awareness as fellow members of the international society. We also look forward to more meetings like this in the near future.

　大学の教育は、いろいろな改革が行われています。我々の技術科教育や木材加工教 育においても、将来像を模索すべき時期に来ていると思われます。グローバルな視点 に立った研究・教育活動が我々に課せられつつあります。産業技術教育学会が開催し た国際学会（ICTES）には、８カ国以上の国から多数の研究者が集まり、技術科教育 について各国からの提案があり、たいへん勉強になったばかりです。

　一方、海外旅行の隆盛に比例するかのように、研究発表においても、国際交流の場 が拡大し続け、今や、我々は、国際化と情報化を避けて通れないところにいることを 、感ぜざるを得ません。このような今日的な諸課題に直面している我々にとって、あ らゆる機会をとらえて、国際的な視点に立った話を聞くことは、非常に有意義なこと であります。木材加工分科会でも、できる範囲で国際的な活動を行うことを、２年前 に決めてからいくつか検討してきた結果、ようやく一つ具体化の運びとなりました。

　今回は、講演者として、アメリカのセントラル・ワシントン大学で木材加工教育な どに、２０年以上携わっておられるカルホーン教授を迎えることになりました。快く 講演を引き受けていただいたカルホーン教授、お世話をいただいた山下教授、各地か らご参集いただいた参加者のみなさんに、厚くお礼申し上げます。

　本会が、木材加工教育の国際的な発展に些かなりとも寄与し、その結果、国際社会 の一員としての自覚を持って、教育を考えることが出来るようになるきっかけになれ ば、それに勝る喜びはありません。今後とも、このような会が具体化することを期待 しています。
